The Jakarta Globe reported on August 31st that the new DPR office building will include “a swimming pool, gym, and spa facilities”, built undoubtedly using taxpayer money. Head architect Budi Sukada stated that the pool and spa would not be comparable to those offered by five-star hotels; instead, designers were looking more into creating facilities similar to those offered in hospitals, which were made with “health” reasons.
“We know the lawmakers sit in meetings for hours, so they need facilities to get their blood flowing,” he said. There have also been rumors about bedrooms being included in the building as well, though they were quashed by Sukada (which is unfortunate, really, since sleeping during meetings seem very, very uncomfortable). DPR, however, was considerate enough to lower the budget from Rp 1.8 trillion to Rp 1.3 trillion, a token sum considering the 11 months of hard work it has taken to pass seven bills (all of them amendments, none new). With the 37 million odd Indonesians living under the poverty line constantly in their minds, don’t they deserve some little luxuries? Comments below.
